Melatonin is a hormone produced in the body and performs many functions though some of them are not well understood. However the important function that it performs is that of natural regulation of sleep during the night hours. Melatonin products and supplements are especially beneficial for those people who have sleep disorders. Melatonin is produced in a pea sized gland called the pineal gland nestled between the two hemispheres of the brain. Popular beliefs about melatonin are that it increases sexual activity.

Although Melatonin is believed to perform wonders on people with sleep disorders but it has been observed that although it is successful with people having primary sleep disorders but it does not work with people having secondary sleep problems. Melatonin sets up the clock of the body and sets it up according to the human functions performed daily and it does help in the growth of the reproductory system as well.

The melatonin supplements available in the market are synthetic versions of the original one produced by the human body. Melatonin is sold as a dietary supplement in the U.S.A but in France and other countries it is sold as a prescription drug.

Health Benefits of Melatonin

It may help in solving two common problems of modern life:

Insomnia
Jet lag

It has also been known to slow down the ageing process and SAD related depression. The most important fact about melatonin is that it is not addictive like other drugs. It is an antioxidant and may help in eliminating cell damaging free radicals, which possibly can be of help in prevention of development of heart disease and cancer. It has also been found effective in lessening the damage related to Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

Interactions with other Drugs etc

There can be excessive drowsiness if melatonin is taken along with other sedatives, muscle relaxants and narcotic pain relievers.

Side Effects

Drowsiness- this is felt by most people within 30 minutes of taking melatonin and it could persist for several hours. Minor side effects- Minor side effects have been felt by people taking a dosage of up to 8mg like head ache, stomach upset, lethargy and disorientation.

Precautions

1. Avoid driving after taking a dosage of melatonin as it causes drowsiness.

2. Melatonin is not advisable for pregnant or nursing mothers.

3. Women planning to conceive should not take melatonin because it has been seen to work as a contraceptive.

4. Children and teenagers don’t require Melatonin because their body produces an ample amount to suffice for its requirement.

5. People suffering from kidney diseases, epilepsy, diabetes, depression, any autoimmune disease, severe allergies, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, leukemia should not take melatonin.

Usage

For insomnia you need to take 1-3 mg immediately before going to bed. For jet lag take .5mg before the day of the flight in the afternoon. ON the day of the flight take it two hours before the time you took it on the previous day and increase the amount to 3mg.
